Alterations and extensions to create additional space for courses and meditation sessions, improve the reception and bookshop areas, relocate administration offices, and improve the accessibility, comfort, and energy performance of the building. We surveyed the building, drew up proposals and obtained planning permission, listed building consent and building control approval. Construction work was administered by Potter & Holmes Architects and carried out by Ian Ainsworth Builders. The most visible alteration is the extension and roofing over of the lightwell, on the prominent Roman Road / Globe Road corner, over which a large stupa will be erected. This will give this untidy corner of the building the celebration it needs as well as providing a potent symbol here at the centre of the East End's 'Buddhist Village'.
The enclosed lightwell contains a lift, improving access to the Basement, which is now 'Breathing Space', a new suite of spaces for the therapeutic courses that the Centre runs.
Also the ground floor accommodation has been extended into the Courtyard. A new glass roof and screen enclose a narrow corner of the Courtyard, resolving the former cramped and congested circulation and Bookshop and providing a generous and airy space for arrival and orientation.
Other parts of the Centre to which the public have access have been improved and renovated. Also, the Community accommodation in the upper reaches of the building has been reconfigured to suit better the Community's needs.
