Freelands Farm
For Tom & Isobel Meikle |
Extensively self-built and still
one of the most highly insulated houses in the UK - 150mm insulation in a timber frame (walls)
wrapped in 50mm of polyurethane foam removing all cold bridges. One north facing window and 54% southerly triple

for the stove) and using mechanical
ventilation with heat recovery. The ground floor is open plan. A
central 2-storey void opens up the space. The
first floor is a series of rooms around a central staircase which
extends up to a secondary, more private living room in the roof. Natural materials
are used everywhere, a majority of them second hand. Finished internaly in organic paints.
